“What a set of pipes”
GEORGE W. RHODES – The Sun Chronicle

Torrin Ryan became enamored with Irish traditional music at 9 years old and has devoted over twenty years to playing the uilleann pipes, simple system flute, and tin whistle. As a competitor, Torrin has been awarded two dozen first place medals across several years of competing at the Mid-Atlantic Fleadh in New York and New Jersey, and won five Senior All-Ireland Fleadh medals across Derry, Ennis, and Tullamore all before turning twenty. At age 14, he was awarded an Uilleann Piping Scholarship by Na Píobairí Uilleann, Dublin IE.
Torrin maintains a diverse performance schedule and regularly tours the United States with various stage productions. He has been featured on PBS’s Bluegrass Underground as well as Brian O’Donovan’s A St. Patrick’s Day Celtic Sojourn. Locally, he is a fixture in the New England and Boston traditional Irish music scenes, often performing at local festivals, regional venues, and hosting Irish sessions. He also collaborates with other musicians in smaller ensembles and provides instrumental tracking for studio recordings.
Torrin is a passionate educator and advocate for traditional Irish music in New England. He taught at the Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann Boston Music School for a decade, is a regular instructor and former board member of the Northeast Uilleann Pipers Tionól, and is an active member of the Boston Uilleann Pipers Club. Recognizing his role as a tradition-bearer, the Southern New England Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program awarded him grants in both 2018 and 2019 to pass down Irish music, history, and the art of the session to a new generation of apprentices.
Torrin’s musical style draws heavy inspiration from the archival recordings of historical piping masters such as Leo Rowsome, Seamus Ennis, and Willie Clancy, while also remaining deeply engaged with the innovations of modern masters of the instrument. This philosophy culminates in his debut solo album, Uilleann Piping from the ‘Boros. The resulting album serves as a personal snapshot of his musical identity and showcases his profound respect for the piping tradition.

I’m very happy to announce my solo album:
Uilleann Piping from the ‘Boros
This recording is a snapshot of what Irish music now means to me, thanks to the sources that have shaped and informed my piping over the past decades.
I’ve spent over a decade with this album’s concept in my mind: a fully solo album of uilleann piping in which I would accomplish every aspect with my own abilities. I played the tunes, recorded, mixed and mastered, and did the art all on my own. The intent is to showcase exactly who I am both musically and beyond at this moment in time. To have a ‘snapshot’ of sorts that I can be proud of and grow from. The music on this album is important and has grown with me, for one reason or another, and I’m happy to put it out into the world.
